Montagnola Garden in a Nutshell

The park, founded in 1696, was designed as a place of recreation and entertainment for the population of the city. Its name derives from the artificial hill (montagnola in Italian) created in the 19th century within the park, which combines the ancient tradition of garden mountains with romantic European landscaping trends.

The elevated position offers a fantastic glimpse of Bologna. Looking out from the Pincio Staircase, you will be able to appreciate Porta Galliera in all its majestic figure and contemplate Via dell’Indipendenza which stretches up to Piazza Maggiore. From the south side of the park you can enjoy an intriguing skyline of the Bolognese roofs from which the Torre degli Asinelli emerges.

The Scalinata del Pincio undoubtedly deserves a dedicated chapter: it is an architectural marvel!

This stairway was inaugurated in 1896 by a royal couple: King Umberto I and his wife, Queen Margherita.

The front is decorated with two beautiful bas-reliefs and in the center there is a fountain representing a nymph grabbed by an octopus, renamed by the Bolognese “the Giant’s Wife” or Neptune.

Its wide and steep stairs are decorated with stone steps and a marble handrail supported by small columns, which create a unique and refined atmosphere. An ideal choice for a romantic walk or for a relaxing stop in the shade of the trees, you will feel enveloped by the beauty and history of this enchanting place.

The Redevelopment Project

Some works are currently underway within the park that affect about a quarter of the area, these works are part of a redevelopment project.

This provides for the replacement of the marquee present today with a building with a low impact on the landscape and energy. Inside it will host a multipurpose room as well as spaces dedicated to recreational and cultural activities.
